The Ultimate Scottish Coastal Route – Driving the Entire West Coast of Scotland

October 4, 2014 By Ron 34 Comments

The Ultimate Scottish Coastal Route For most people, including me, the west coast of Scotland offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. And yet, for some unknown reason, there is not something like an 'Official Coastal Route' which would cover most roads on the Scottish west coast, to let you admire this stunning part of Scotland. It's of course not easy, the west coast isn't straight, it has many inland sea lochs, islands and other obstacles, making the journey a rather lengthy and time consuming yet very pleasant enterprise. If you want to make this journey along the coast … [Read more...] about The Ultimate Scottish Coastal Route – Driving the Entire West Coast of Scotland

Things you Must See and Do in Wester Ross

September 7, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

So you've decided to Holiday in Wester Ross. Accommodation is booked, travel plans are made and there you are, in one of Scotland's most beautiful scenic landscapes. The rather large area that comprises Wester Ross has no strict borders but it can roughly be found between Loch Carron in the South, Ullapool in the North, Kinlochewe in the East and The Minch, the sea between the Outer Hebrides and the west coast. With so many beautiful things to see and do it is hard to decide where to go first, and what you really should see before you head home again. I've compiled a wee list of things … [Read more...] about Things you Must See and Do in Wester Ross

Visit Beautiful Glen Affric

May 22, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

Lots of tourists visit Urquhart Castle and end up one way or the other in Drumnadrochit for a bite to eat, to visit the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition, take a cruise on Loch Ness or to just go where most people seem to go. It can be quite busy here and all for a good reason, don't get me wrong. But what if you like the peace and quite of Scotland's beautiful hills and glens? If you follow the A831 west to Cannich you can get just that. At Cannich there's a single track road leading into Glen Affric, one of the most beautiful glens of Scotland according to many. Glen Affric is a National … [Read more...] about Visit Beautiful Glen Affric

Gearrannan Black House Village Isle of Lewis

May 18, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

Gearrannan is a black-house village on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It's a great experience to visit this place and step back in time to see how life was in a typical crofting township of the last century. Nowadays the Black House village consists mainly of self catering cottages but there is a nice wee museum where you can usually find the friendly man below on his weaving machine making the famous Harris Tweed. He's also happy to start it up for you to give you a demonstration. The weaving and cloth making in the Outer Hebrides has a long and interesting history. You can find Gearrannan on … [Read more...] about Gearrannan Black House Village Isle of Lewis

St. Clements Church Isle of Harris

May 17, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

MacLeod clan chiefs of Dunvegan and Harris built the beautiful St Clement's church as their burial place in about 1520. Although many of their tombstones survive, the exact location of the MacLeod graves is uncertain. St. Clement's fell into ruin after the Protestant Reformation of 1560. It was rebuilt just over two centuries later by Captain Alexander MacLeod, but within three years substantial repairs were required after the church was damaged by fire. In 1873 the building was restored by the Countess of Dunmore. St Clements Church can be found in Rodel, at the southernmost tip of the … [Read more...] about St. Clements Church Isle of Harris

Lewis and Harris named Top Islands in Europe

February 19, 2014 By Ron Leave a Comment

The Isles of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides have been named top islands in Europe and appear in the world top five according to a readers poll on the Trip Advisor website. Two other Scottish islands - Isle of Mull and Orkney - also feature in the European islands top ten. Orkney comes in at no four in the list with the Isle of Mull at no nine. The Scotsman writes: James Kay, a TripAdvisor spokesman explained that the islands awards, now in their second year, are based on the quality and quantity of highly-rated hotels, restaurants, and attractions listed for each island and … [Read more...] about Lewis and Harris named Top Islands in Europe
