The old packhorse bridge in Carrbridge in the Cairngorms National Park is the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands. The plaque near the viewpoint reads as follows: "At the beginning of the eighteenth century, to the inconvenience of both travellers and local people, there was no point at which the River Dulnain could be crossed when it was in spate, and burials at the Church of Duthil were often delayed. Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant, Clan Chief, commissioned John Niccelsone, a mason from Ballindaloch, to build a bridge at Lynne of Dalrachney. Built between May and November … [Read more...] about Old Packhorse Bridge in Carrbridge

Hebrides Islands on the Edge – A Photographic Journey
Early in May 2013 the BBC broadcasted the stunning television series on the Scottish Hebridean islands titled "Hebrides Islands on the Edge". The first run however was shown on BBC Scotland only but I've read that on Thursday 11th of July at 9pm the series will be shown on BBC meaning that anyone in the UK and in other countries can see this amazing documentary as well. Being a island hopper myself I thought I'd share some of my pictures and memories of the Hebridean Isles of Scotland. My travels have brought me to quite a few islands so far: Islay, Jura, Gigha, Colonsay, Mull, Rum, Seil, … [Read more...] about Hebrides Islands on the Edge – A Photographic Journey
Cycling the West Highland Way Part 2
Allan’s bike grinds to a halt, leaving him to take on a supporting role as Robert and Simon press on to Milngavie As Allan and his bike got closer it dawned on me what had happened - the creaking freehub in the back wheel had completely collapsed, and in an instant that was it, game over. All that preparation, all the planning, ruined by a simple bearing. Such is life in the mountains though - this was an extreme challenge and we always knew there was a chance that any of the bikes might have let us down. Allan`s only option was to turn back to Kingshouse, leaving Robert and myself to push … [Read more...] about Cycling the West Highland Way Part 2
Cycling the West Highland Way Part 1
Cycling the West Highland Way in two and a half days - Whose bright idea was that? Robert Shaw, Simon Freeman and Allan campbell cycled the full length of the west highland way (96miles) over 3 days. They started on the 29th April 2013 in memory of Robert's dad Bobby Shaw. Every one of us will be affected by cancer in some way during our lives so we thought we 'd try and raise much needed funds for a great cause! Simon Freeman writes: If I`m honest, it was probably my fault. Robert Shaw and Allan Campbell were quick to show their enthusiasm for the project though, and so the plan was … [Read more...] about Cycling the West Highland Way Part 1
The Small Isles by Becky Williamson
Most of the content on Scotland Info is written by myself because I've actually been to these areas and places, which makes the writing a bit easier and realistic. Since I haven't been to every part of Scotland (yet) I sometimes rely on others to send me interesting information, pictures etc. Now I have been to the Isle of Rum many years ago, the only island I have visited in The Small Isles. It was on a cloudy and somewhat dreich day and I was only there for a few hours. Hardly enough to get a good enough impression and it was in the time that my photographic skills were not as good as they … [Read more...] about The Small Isles by Becky Williamson
Arctic Convoys in Edinburgh Exhibition
I'm always keen to read about the Arctic Convoys that sailed from the North of Scotland to Russia to deliver supplies to the Soviet Union during WWII, from August 1941 to May 1945 to be precise. My fascination has grown over the years due to the many times I've visited the very area and loch where they sailed from, Loch Ewe in Wester Ross. It's hard to overlook the many, mostly ruined, remains of the gun emplacements and other structures of this dark period when you are travelling around Loch Ewe. And if it's not for the structures, this period is still very much in the hearts and souls of the … [Read more...] about Arctic Convoys in Edinburgh Exhibition
