Guest blogger Keith Savage writes about his passion for Scotland. Keith: I remember walking into the Flattie Bar across from the docks in Orkney's second city, Stromness. It was a cozy, dark place, little more than a green shack attached to the much larger and more stately Stromness Hotel. Silence and turned backs greeted us as my wife and I entered. Everyone watched a small TV mounted in the corner. There, in the fuzzy technicolor, was Mel Gibson in his blue face paint, riding up and down the lines of his Scottish warriors, shouting his convictions. The entire bar was captivated by … [Read more...] about Scotland on My Mind: A Simple Love Story
Raise a Glass at Burns Night Tonight
Burns Night in Scotland - 25th of January Once again it is that time of year where many of us will be suffering from the lowest of depressions also known as the January blues. Christmas debt, broken New Year resolutions, and an otherwise total lack of motivation to do anything aside from stay in and watch television until the next festive season has left many of us down in the dumps. However do not fear for that most jovial of Scottish folk holidays lies just round the corner, we are of course talking about Burns Night. Burns Night is one of our favorite holidays; it is a flagship event … [Read more...] about Raise a Glass at Burns Night Tonight
A Lifetime Dream to Visit St Kilda
Every self respecting Scotland website should have a great page about St Kilda and we're happy that we have just that. Guest blogger and Photographer Marcus McAdam visited St Kilda and wrote a fascinating account of his journey, and took quite a few spectacular pictures too. Visit this link to see for yourself. As St Kilda is extremely remote and not easy to get to, we at Scotland Info can't really get enough of more images and videos. The video below, a promotional video from www.gotostkilda.co.uk, tells the story of a man's lifetime dream to visit St. Kilda. I don't know if the story is … [Read more...] about A Lifetime Dream to Visit St Kilda
Visit the Scottish Islands This Year
The Outer Hebrides and Inner Hebridean Islands of Scotland are a very popular tourist destination. The islands all have their own unique character and it's sometimes like visiting different countries when you hop from one island to another. As more and more folk take advantage of the RET scheme, (Road Equivalent Tariff), the islands become more and more popular and the amount of ferry space is coming under pressure. In recent years it was sometimes impossible to book a ferry for several days in a row on some of the popular routes to the Western Isles. We ourselves have been stuck on North Uist … [Read more...] about Visit the Scottish Islands This Year
People Make Glasgow a Great City
It could perhaps be interesting to compare the Scottish cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow but when you've visited them both you know it doesn't make real sense, they are a world apart and that's why you should visit them both to find out for yourself. But If you really want to bring it to the point I think it's safe to say that Edinburgh is more of a Tourist City and Glasgow a People's City. Let me explain. Edinburgh is a stunning city, probably one of the prettiest in Europe, with Edinburgh Castle proudly situated at the top of the Royal Mile and the seat of the Scottish Parliament and … [Read more...] about People Make Glasgow a Great City
The Long Road on the Isle of Jura
The Isle of Jura is not an island for an impromptu visit since it doesn't have a direct car ferry link with the mainland. Only in the summer there is a passenger ferry, a RIB for 12 persons, operating a service from Tayvallich on the mainland to Craighouse on Jura. So Jura is quite remote and one of the few inhabited islands in Scotland not being serviced by Calmac directly. The only car ferry to Jura is operated by the Argyll and Bute Council and sails between Port Askaig on the Isle of Islay to Feolin on Jura. It's a five minute crossing over the Sound of Islay, the fast flowing channel that … [Read more...] about The Long Road on the Isle of Jura
