General Wade Military Roads in Scotland

October 21, 2017 By Greg Murray Leave a Comment

On a cold and frosty morning, 13th of November 1715 the supporters of the exiled Stuart king, known as Jacobites and led by the lacklustre Earl of Mar faced the regimented ranks of the Government Redcoats led by the Duke of Argyll across the frozen morass of Sheriffmuir near Stirling. Over the next few hours the two sides hacked away at each other, neither gaining much advantage nor making any headway; but their objectives were very different. Mar had to cross the River Forth if he was to take his army on to Edinburgh; Argyll had only to stop him. As the sun set over distant Ben Ledi, the two … [Read more...] about General Wade Military Roads in Scotland

North Coast 500 Driving Tour

October 10, 2017 By Ron 1 Comment

The title "Mother of all driving Routes" in the world probably goes to Route 66 in the United States. Almost everyone knows the name, the scenery and the accompanying song "Get your kicks on Route 66" which was sung by many, including the Stones. Folk from all over the world make the pilgrimage to the US to drive the 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica in California. The US 66, as the Highway is called, was of importance for those who migrated west and the road supported many communities and businesses it passed and it still does so today. A couple of years ago the North Highland … [Read more...] about North Coast 500 Driving Tour

Loch Ness Scotland

Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle

When you look at a 3-D map of the Scottish Highlands , the first thing you notice is a long divide going south-west to north-east, from Fort William to Inverness. This is what is called the "Great Glen"(gaelic : An Gleann Mòr), a large geological fault called the Great Glen Fault, caused by the sliding between the Grampian mountains in the south, towards south-east, and the Northwest Highlands, in the north, towards north-west. The Great Glen south of Inverness is the location of the famous Loch Ness and Loch Ness Monster Legend. About Loch Ness Loch Ness is a deep loch of freshwater. It … [Read more...] about Loch Ness Scotland

Stunning New Pages on Scotland Info

November 10, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

Over the years I've taken thousands of pictures and visited many parts of Scotland and most of these places made a lasting impression, both in my mind and in harddisk space as pictures on my computer. Some of these images and memories have found a place on the current Scotland Info Website pages but a lot of them haven't, but that is about to change. I'm quite proud to announce a new section on the Scotland Info website titled Scotland Feature Pages. These pages will be dedicated to the most beautiful places I've been to in Scotland and it doesn't come as a surprise that this will eventually … [Read more...] about Stunning New Pages on Scotland Info

Scottish Autumn Travel Report

October 17, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

This year the weather has been off track for some strange reason, climate change perhaps or is it just the usual Scottish Climate? I read somewhere that Scotland had two summers this year, one week in April and one week in September. I was sort of lucky to witness both tail ends of these warm and sunny episodes but I was also unfortunate enough to witness the down side, howling gales, pissing rain and generally dreich weather. Dreich weather refers to wet, dull, gloomy, dismal, dreary, miserable or any combination of these. While we were on Islay in May for three weeks, this second Scotland … [Read more...] about Scottish Autumn Travel Report

North Kessock Views

June 4, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

Although North Kessock is just a dot on the map and is located next to the A9 road and Kessock Bridge it is an idyllic wee village. Why? If you sit beside the waterfront where the road ends at the point where the Beauly Firth and Moray Firth meet you often have the chance of seeing Bottlenose Dolphins. That is quite special if you keep in mind that across the firth is the bustling city of Inverness and next to you thousands of travellers drive over the huge Kessock Bridge each day. This wee village, which runs along the road, has a good hotel and other amenities. Have a look at the local … [Read more...] about North Kessock Views
