Chasing Northern Lights in Scotland

February 3, 2017 By Ron 30 Comments

Northern Lights over Loch Ewe

Watching the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is something most of us have very high on our bucket list. Only a few, relatively speaking, have actually been lucky enough to see the Aurora in its full glory. Due to the fact that the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon taking place over the Arctic regions of the world, it's also logical that the more north you are the more chance you have to actually witness it. The Aurora is triggered by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun, due to flares on the sun's surface, that enter the earth's atmosphere. The resulting … [Read more...] about Chasing Northern Lights in Scotland

Great Walks just Outside Glasgow and Edinburgh

January 31, 2017 By Greg Murray Leave a Comment

The great Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are packed with culture, history and, if you need to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life, interesting walks to discover. Edinburgh, the capital, on the east coast, has an enthralling mix of spires and artistic excitement. Over on the west coast, the City of Glasgow, has transformed itself from an industrial power-house to a hotbed of modern culture and style. Both cities have many great walks, within their historically rich quarters, and outwith, in the hinterlands, where time ticks by at a slower pace and where you can recover from … [Read more...] about Great Walks just Outside Glasgow and Edinburgh

Sailing Holidays on the Scottish Coast

January 29, 2017 By Greg Murray Leave a Comment

Because of its rugged coastline, and its countless inlets, lochs, and windswept islands, many believe that the best way to see Scotland is from the water. Indeed, much that Scotland’s coastline has to offer is totally inaccessible by land. Conversely, the increasing popularity of Scotland for maritime holidays has led to an expansion and improvement of berthing facilities such as marinas and pontoons, meaning boating around the Scottish coast is now simpler than ever before. Skilled sailors can easily rent yachts or boats to navigate the shores of Scotland, while those without sailing … [Read more...] about Sailing Holidays on the Scottish Coast

For those of you planning to visit Glasgow in July this year please be advised that the Glasgow Subway will be shut down entirely from the 2nd of July onwards. The Subway, or "Clockwork Orange" as it is sometimes referred to, will reopen on the 1st of august 2016. The Glasgow Subway was finished in 1896 and the first passengers were welcomed on the 14th of December 1896. It's the third-oldest underground metro system in the world and the only one in the UK which operates completely underground. The Glasgow Subway is currently undergoing a £288m modernisation plan to upgrade or replace … [Read more...] about Glasgow Subway Closed in July

Tour Speyside with Scottish Routes

April 20, 2016 By Ron Leave a Comment

The Speyside Whisky region is centred around the River Spey. At 109 miles long, it is the fastest flowing river in Scotland (not to mention one of the great salmon rivers). It’s this river and its tributaries that form the heart of the Speyside region. Speyside is home to almost half of all the Scottish distilleries. These include the big names of Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Macallan, as well as lesser known distilleries such as Craigellachie and Ballindalloch. And although castles, gardens, walking, the beautiful landscape and fishing are some of the reasons for many tourists to visit … [Read more...] about Tour Speyside with Scottish Routes

The Highland Boundary Fault Line

February 12, 2016 By Greg Murray 11 Comments

At Garron Point, a little to the north of the town of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, a small band of yellowish rock juts out into cold waters of the North Sea: carbonated serpentine, a tough rock that millions of years ago when molten crystallised in a crack formed in the earth’s crust known as the Highland Boundary Fault Line. This is one of the few places in Scotland that you can physically see the geology of this most important of faults; but from the air or even space the division created by the fissure is striking; and its impact on Scottish history even more so. Around 430 million years … [Read more...] about The Highland Boundary Fault Line
