Dryburgh Abbey

November 15, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

There is something about Dryburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders, is it the walk towards the Abbey with the majestic trees in the park or just the serene and peaceful feeling one gets when walking over the grounds of the Abbey? Perhaps the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey are not as majestic as the neighbouring Melrose Abbey or Jedburgh Abbey but Dryburgh is even more so a place where the medieval monks lived a contemplative life, perhaps it's that atmosphere one feels when walking towards the Abbey. The ruins stand amidst a wooded seclusion beside the River Tweed. Dryburgh became the premier house in … [Read more...] about Dryburgh Abbey

Scottish Ice Trip Video

November 11, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

I found this stunning video today and the introduction to the video is just as good as the video itself: "If there is one place on earth where climbers celebrate the arrival of the next snowstorm, it has to be Scotland. Each winter, pounded by the North Atlantic winds, the Scottish Highlands are covered by a layer of snow and frost at the mercy of weather conditions. Here, winter climbing has existed for more than a century, and the smell of adventure is as authentic as the whisky borne of the local peat. Climbing is done from the ground up, without bolts, and generally onsight. An … [Read more...] about Scottish Ice Trip Video

Stunning New Pages on Scotland Info

November 10, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

Over the years I've taken thousands of pictures and visited many parts of Scotland and most of these places made a lasting impression, both in my mind and in harddisk space as pictures on my computer. Some of these images and memories have found a place on the current Scotland Info Website pages but a lot of them haven't, but that is about to change. I'm quite proud to announce a new section on the Scotland Info website titled Scotland Feature Pages. These pages will be dedicated to the most beautiful places I've been to in Scotland and it doesn't come as a surprise that this will eventually … [Read more...] about Stunning New Pages on Scotland Info

Scottish Autumn Travel Report

October 17, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

This year the weather has been off track for some strange reason, climate change perhaps or is it just the usual Scottish Climate? I read somewhere that Scotland had two summers this year, one week in April and one week in September. I was sort of lucky to witness both tail ends of these warm and sunny episodes but I was also unfortunate enough to witness the down side, howling gales, pissing rain and generally dreich weather. Dreich weather refers to wet, dull, gloomy, dismal, dreary, miserable or any combination of these. While we were on Islay in May for three weeks, this second Scotland … [Read more...] about Scottish Autumn Travel Report

A History of Scotland by Neil Oliver

September 25, 2011 By Ron 1 Comment

You probably know Neil Oliver from the very successful BBC series Coast. Fortunately Neil didn't stop there and since he is from Scotland who could better tell and show you all about the very rich history of Scotland? In ten thought-provoking, episodes Neil Oliver brings a fresh perspective to Scotland’s past and challenges many of the perceived notions of Scottish history. With stunning, BAFTA-winning cinematography and mesmerising narrative the series tells of battles and allegiances, political intrigue and religious conflict. This is one of the best Scotland DVD's if you ask me. The … [Read more...] about A History of Scotland by Neil Oliver

North Kessock Views

June 4, 2011 By Ron Leave a Comment

Although North Kessock is just a dot on the map and is located next to the A9 road and Kessock Bridge it is an idyllic wee village. Why? If you sit beside the waterfront where the road ends at the point where the Beauly Firth and Moray Firth meet you often have the chance of seeing Bottlenose Dolphins. That is quite special if you keep in mind that across the firth is the bustling city of Inverness and next to you thousands of travellers drive over the huge Kessock Bridge each day. This wee village, which runs along the road, has a good hotel and other amenities. Have a look at the local … [Read more...] about North Kessock Views
