V&A Museum of Design Dundee Opening in 2018

October 29, 2017 By Ron Leave a Comment

When planning your Scotland holiday for 2018 make sure to consider a visit to the city of Dundee, as something very special is happening there, more about that further down. Perhaps you didn't know but Dundee has become the first UNESCO City of Design in the UK in 2014. This is a prestigious award that recognises the huge contribution the city has made to design worldwide. Dundee received this award because it has an established design industry and its designs include aspirin, biomedical research that has led to hundreds of new cancer drugs, comics including The Beano and The Dandy, orange … [Read more...] about V&A Museum of Design Dundee Opening in 2018

Chasing Whisky In The Spey Valley

October 22, 2017 By Greg Murray Leave a Comment

When on holiday in Scotland one of my favourite things to do is visiting distilleries in the Spey Valley, the Spey Valley is not the only area in Scotland for visiting distilleries, but the advantage you have is there are so many within a small area and touring a few in one day is a possibility. The whisky trail in the spey valley is fed by the great local ingredients like the crystal clear spring waters and abundant supplies of the finest barley, within the spey valley you will more than half of the Scottish distilleries supplying Scotland’s Malt Whisky that is imported all around the … [Read more...] about Chasing Whisky In The Spey Valley

General Wade Military Roads in Scotland

October 21, 2017 By Greg Murray Leave a Comment

On a cold and frosty morning, 13th of November 1715 the supporters of the exiled Stuart king, known as Jacobites and led by the lacklustre Earl of Mar faced the regimented ranks of the Government Redcoats led by the Duke of Argyll across the frozen morass of Sheriffmuir near Stirling. Over the next few hours the two sides hacked away at each other, neither gaining much advantage nor making any headway; but their objectives were very different. Mar had to cross the River Forth if he was to take his army on to Edinburgh; Argyll had only to stop him. As the sun set over distant Ben Ledi, the two … [Read more...] about General Wade Military Roads in Scotland

Highlands 140 – A Great Highlands Driving Route

October 15, 2017 By Ron 6 Comments

I've driven most roads in Scotland, especially the scenic ones, and enjoyed almost every mile of all of them. I don't think there is such a thing as a boring road in Scotland, especially when you're outside urban areas. And no matter how beautiful some of these roads are, there are always a few that are just a tad more stunning, roads that stick in your mind as being "very special". One of them is the Road to the Isles and the other one is the drive through Glen Shiel. Both offer an unforgettable driving experience amidst some of the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer. Now what … [Read more...] about Highlands 140 – A Great Highlands Driving Route

The Royal National Mòd is the main annual festival and celebration of Scottish Gaelic language and culture, song and arts. It's often referred to simply as the Mòd and is usually held in October. The Royal National Mòd is organised by The Highland Association which was founded in Oban in 1891. Scotland’s premier Gaelic festival provides opportunities for people of all ages to perform across a range of competitive disciplines including Gaelic music and song, highland dancing, instrumental, drama, sport and literature. North Coast 500 Driving Tour

October 10, 2017 By Ron 1 Comment

The title "Mother of all driving Routes" in the world probably goes to Route 66 in the United States. Almost everyone knows the name, the scenery and the accompanying song "Get your kicks on Route 66" which was sung by many, including the Stones. Folk from all over the world make the pilgrimage to the US to drive the 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica in California. The US 66, as the Highway is called, was of importance for those who migrated west and the road supported many communities and businesses it passed and it still does so today. A couple of years ago the North Highland … [Read more...] about North Coast 500 Driving Tour
